Jewels, Steam, and Stories: My Experience at the Stradbally Steam Rally
This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to showcase my handmade jewellery at the Stradbally Steam Rally, one of Ireland’s most cherished annual events. As someone who loves history, craftsmanship, and community spirit, this event was the perfect setting for my work. But nothing could have prepared me for the beauty that would unfold over the weekend.
A Journey Back in Time
For those unfamiliar with the Stradbally Steam Rally, it’s much more than just a display of vintage machinery. It’s a nostalgic journey back in time, where the sights, sounds, and smells transport you to an era where steam powered the world. The rally, held in the picturesque town of Stradbally in County Laois, draws enthusiasts from all over Ireland and beyond. They come not just to admire the beautifully restored steam engines, tractors, and vintage cars, but to celebrate a way of life that’s slowly fading into history.
Setting Up Shop
As the gates opened on Saturday morning, I was ready to share my handcrafted jewellery with the world. My stall, adorned with twinkling lights and rustic wooden displays, was set up amidst the hum of engines and the cheerful chatter of visitors. I create each piece by hand, so it was special to be surrounded by Ireland’s rich heritage, as I often draw inspiration from nature and unique designs.
From the moment the first visitors trickled in, I could sense that this was going to be a unique experience. The crowd at Stradbally is unlike any other; it’s a wonderful mix of families, history buffs, and craft lovers, all eager to discover something new.
Connecting Through Craft
One of the highlights of the weekend was the connections I made with people who stopped by my stall. Some were long-time rally-goers, sharing memories of past events, while others were first-timers, wide-eyed at the spectacle around them. Many were drawn to my jewellery because of its handmade quality and the stories behind each piece.
Some of my customers spent many minutes with me, and I was so happy to serve them and listen to the personal stories behind their own favourite jewellery they chose to wear. Earrings, rings and bracelets were most popular.
The Magic of Stradbally
Beyond selling my jewellery, I had the chance to explore the rally myself. When I wasn’t busy at the stall, I wandered through the rows of steam engines, marvelling at the craftsmanship and dedication that go into preserving these machines. The sight of steam engines puffing away, with their polished brass and churning gears, is something truly awe-inspiring.
I also explored the stalls with old hammers and other old tools. I love old hammers because they are my favourite tool when I make my own jewellery. I often design hammered earrings as I love the unique design each time.
The rally also offered a variety of other attractions, from live music to traditional craft demonstrations. There was a tangible sense of community, as people gathered to celebrate not just the machines, but the shared heritage they represent. In a world that’s increasingly fast-paced and digital, the Stradbally Steam Rally is a reminder of the beauty in slowing down and appreciating the craftsmanship of the past.

A Weekend to Remember
As the rally drew to a close on Monday evening, I packed up my stall with a heart full of gratitude. The weekend had been a whirlwind of activity, but it also brought a deep sense of fulfilment. I had not only sold my jewellery, but I had also shared stories, learned from others, and become part of a community that values tradition and craftsmanship.
Leaving Stradbally, with the smell of coal smoke still lingering in the air, I knew that this was an experience I’d carry with me for a long time. The Stradbally Steam Rally isn’t just an event; it’s a celebration of history, creativity, and the connections we make along the way. And I can’t wait to return next year, with new designs and more stories to share.
If you ever find yourself in Ireland during the August bank holiday weekend, do yourself a favour and visit the Stradbally Steam Rally.
